The Student Veterans of America recently announced an initiative to raise awareness of certain schools presenting particular problems for veterans, and will "strongly urge student veterans to avoid these institutions," according to a press release.
The decision to create this resource came "after SVA received several complaints regarding student recruitment practices taking place in Southern California." The press release includes a short list of these colleges.
For example, after Corinthian Colleges announced closure, several schools affiliated with the company continued to actively recruit students, traveling to military bases to speak with active duty service members, the statement says. Some colleges reportedly fail to provide training that leads to jobs.
The reason government agencies are involved is the use of federal funds through the G.I. Bill of Rights. As reported here before, many for-profit colleges recruit veterans for vocational programs, while a local community college may offer an identical program at a fraction of the cost.
