Young adults are particularly vulnerable to the H1N1 influenza, according to the Center For Disease Control. The federal agency has now posted guidelines that are directed specifically for colleges and universities, as the new academic year begins. The information deals with a number of potential contingencies, preventive measures, and risk factors. Many community colleges do not house students in dormitories, but the guidelines also deal with classroom situations and items to consider when contemplating whether to suspend classes.
For faculty members, it may be appropriate to announce to classes in advance how the educational process will continue for individual students who become ill, and what to do in the eventuality that classes are cancelled. The report is worth a look and could serve as a focal point of discussion during meetings that are being held this week on campus.
An earlier post, available here, addressed suggestions on how to shift from traditional face-to-face teaching to online instruction if the need should arise.
