The Texas House of Representatives adjourned Sunday night without passing key bills that are necessary to keep the wheels of government turning for the next biennium. Many have speculated that, absent herculean efforts today, the governor could call a Special Session.
There is also the possibility of a filibuster in the Senate.
Here are a couple of choice quotes in the Austin American Statesman:
Speaker Joe Straus: “What’s a little chaos before we go home?”
Rep. Garnet Coleman (D-Houston): “Nothing’s dead” until the session is over.
Under the Texas Constitution, the Regular Session must finish its work today. TCCTA is monitoring a number of bills potentially affecting two-year schools. As it stands right now, proportionality in funding health benefits for community college educators will not be invoked in the appropriations bill.
Once the Session is over, the task begins of reviewing the final language of bills to be sent to the governor. Members are urged to consult the Blog frequently for updates.
